Happy 62nd Birthday Mom!

Words or this party cannot describe how wonderful my mom is. For anyone who has had the privilege to know my mom at any point in their life will know what I am talking about. She is the kindest person to all who she passes in her journey through life. She raised six kids and is now raising 15(soon to be 16) grand kids. She doesn't hesitate to drop everything and help any of her children or grandchildren. I cannot believe she is 62!! She certainly doesn't look it. I threw her a party at my house today. It is always crazy to have the whole family over. But I love it and I love to throw parties. It was nice for my mom to not have to cook or clean up. She can just relax on this day and enjoy those who love her the most.

Wheeler Farm

We took Chloe to Wheeler Farm for her first time on Saturday. She has never seen a real pig before and argued whether of not we knew what we were talking about. Her favorite part of the day was the ponies. I love Wheeler farm. I love that it is free and they have expanded it a lot.

Hannah's Back Handspring

I just have to show off this video of Hannah doing her back handspring. Her gymnastics teacher told her she wasn't ready. However that is the key to getting her to do something. Tell her she can't do it or she is not ready and she will prove you wrong. She taught herself to do it on the trampoline while Dan took this video. The next step is to do in on the floor. I have much faith it won't take her long. However a part of me is proud of her and the other part of me is glad we have good health insurance.

How to be Fierce....finding your inner Kali!!

This is an article I read in my Yoga Journal magazine. It was very interesting because of the way people see yoga as a peaceful journey through breath and movement. And it really is quite more than that. I will quote the article, with a bit of my own words.... so its less confusing what an "inner Kali" is....

"You need to find your inner Kali side." I told a friend of mine. You may know someone like my friend. Very busy but also very nice. She values yoga as I do and takes seriously than most. And take life just as seriously juggling work, studies and family trying to balance it all without feeling guilty about spending more time on one or the other. Her approach to yoga is like most people that go into yoga and it is the same as her approach to life. She is so conflict averse that it's hard for her even to admit she has negative feelings. She rarely uses her voice, and she once told me that she can't remember the last time she felt anger. But at this moment, mired in a life conflict that adds more stress than she is use to she is beginning to feel like she needs to find a way to approach this in a "yoga" sort of way. In other words she wants me to give her a prescription for solving her conflict in a nice, nonviolent yogic way. Instead, what popped out of my mouth was "You need to find your Kali side." I suppose I could have put it differently, I could have told her about the moment Bhagavard Gita when the god Krishna tells the warrior Arjuna to so his duty and stand up and fight. Or, I could have said that yoga isn't just about being peaceful its also about being strong and wild and forceful. Yoga, I could have reminded her includes Warrior II, which is basically the posture you take when you're aiming an arrow at someone 's heart. But my intuition was that she needed not so much a rational argument as an image, something to by pass the cultural conditioning of her left-brain dominated mind. Like so many other people who practice yoga had a half-conscious tendency to confuse being yoga with being nice. True, kindness and equanimity are essential yogic qualities, but people can use this as a mask that cover difficult emotions for one to expose. Anger is a gift. And it can be the destroyer of all your inner demons. The simplest way to become familiar with the energy of Kali is to put an image of her where you can see it and look at it from time to time. She is beautiful, but also fierce. Let Kali's blessings purify your heart of fear and anger. Let her draw those negative emotions out of you and dissolve them like smoke." Take this with what you will. You can read it again and understand it or you can just forget it and feel what you like....Namaste!

Week at a glance

First of all I can't believe I even have time to write anything this week at all. Let's just start off with the kids first week of school. They both love their teachers which I think makes all the difference. However I think the curriculum is a little too easy this year for both of them. And I think they might get bored. The more I learn about curriculum, state laws, and the "no child left behind" act(don't even get me started on this one)the more frustrated I get with the states curriculum and the more I think I don't want to be a teacher but rather some one on a bored of something to do something about it. Anyway off subject....I am Preston's room mom this year and I will also be teaching the new art program "art though the age's" in his class this year. I sadly won't be in Hannah's as much as I would like. We went to back to school night this week and met the teacher's and said hello to Mr Jameson the principle whom I know very well for all the wrong reasons. The kids seem to know the routine really well and are well adjusted.

Chloe loves day care at the U of U. After I pry her off of me screaming in the morning she seems to do fine five minutes after I leave. Her potty training is going really well. And the teacher's can't believe how advanced she is for having just turned 2 in July. At home she is singing songs she has learned and she acts out all the games they do. She goes around the house calling everyone kids. Which I am sure that is what her teacher does. "Hey kids look at this" she will say.

I on the other hand had a very interesting week. My first class is yoga and of coarse I LOVE IT!! I love the fact that there is such a mix of people in there. Not just women. But guys and even the U foot ball players. Its so fun and my teacher is such a hoot....and a real tree hugger. I mean the no shaving kind of girl. She is awesome and she asked me to be the "advanced" example of the class today. I even have my own locker like gym class in high school with a lock and everything. I had to ask someone how to use it. I mean come on its been....well umm...long time since I used a pad lock. One turn to the right skip the 2nd number back to the left and stop at the third. After yoga I head off the my diversity class. My professor is so fascinating. She is the perfect person to teach a diversity class. She grew up an "army brat" so she has been to lots of schools all over the world. She got her masters at the University of New Mexico and has taught all grades and subjects all over the world as well. She settled in Utah to help the Native Americans on the reservations fight for the rights of a good education so they are able to apply to university's like the rest of us. It is a very interesting class and I am excited to learn from someone like her. Then I am off to math class. The first day I couldn't find it and then when I finally did its in one of those big stadium seating class where the chalk bordes slide up and down the wall because its is 15 feet high. There are 230 kids in this class. So much for getting to know anyone or even the teacher. Well enough is enough....time to get back to my home work!!BackpackBack-to-School Joke
